Bhutan
The Last Shangri-La
About Bhutan
Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is one of the world's most exclusive and enchanting destinations. This tiny Himalayan kingdom has carefully preserved its unique Buddhist culture, stunning natural environment, and traditional way of life while gradually opening its doors to the world.
The country operates on the philosophy of Gross National Happiness, prioritizing well-being over economic growth. This approach is evident in everything from the traditional architecture that all buildings must follow to the extensive forest coverage that by law must remain above 60%.
Begin your journey in Paro, home to the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), perched dramatically on a cliff face 3,000 feet above the valley floor. This sacred site is the symbol of Bhutan and a must-visit for every traveler. The hike to reach it is challenging but incredibly rewarding.
Explore Thimphu, the only capital city in the world without traffic lights, where ancient traditions blend with modern life. Visit the Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong, and the Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking the valley. Experience the vibrant weekend market where locals trade everything from red rice to handwoven textiles.
Punakha, the former capital, houses the stunning Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers. This fortress-monastery is considered the most beautiful in Bhutan and hosts the colorful Punakha Tshechu festival. The surrounding valley offers scenic hikes through terraced rice paddies.
Bhutan's festivals (Tshechus) are spectacular cultural events featuring masked dances, religious ceremonies, and community gatherings. Attending one is a highlight of any Bhutan trip.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (Mar-May) for blooming rhododendrons and clear skies. Autumn (Sep-Nov) for festivals and stunning mountain views. Monsoon (Jun-Aug) brings rain but lush greenery.
